چکیده

This design, which we call the (7, 3, 1) design, makes appearances in many areas of mathematics. It seems to turn up again and again in unexpected places. An earlier paper in this MAGAZINE [4] described (7, 3, 1)’s appearance in a number of different areas, including finite projective planes, as the Fano plane (FIGURE 1); graph theory, as the Heawood graph and the doubly regular round-robin tournament of order 7; topology, as an arrangement of six mutually adjacent hexagons on the torus; (−1, 1) matrices, as a skew-Hadamard matrix of order 8; and algebraic number theory, as the splitting field of the polynomial (x2 − 2)(x2 − 3)(x2 − 5). In this paper, we show how (7, 3, 1) makes appearances in three areas, namely (1) Hamming’s error-correcting codes, (2) Singer designs and difference sets based on n-dimensional finite projective geometries, and (3) normed algebras. We begin with an overview of block designs, including two descriptions of (7, 3, 1). We then describe certain binary error-correcting codes called Hamming codes, in which (7, 3, 1) makes three different appearances. Next, we expand the treatment of Hamming codes from binary codes to codes over all finite fields Fq , where q is an odd prime. Then, we describe generalizations of the block design structure of (7, 3, 1) to

Today, digital libraries are important academic resources including millions of citations and bibliographic essential information such as titles, author's names and location of publications. From the view of knowledge accumulation management, the ability to search fast, accurate, desired contents, has a great importance. The complexity and similarity in these resources cause many challenges and...

سیستم شناسایی و طبقه بندی اسامی در متون فارسی

Name entity recognition (NER) is a system that can identify one or more kinds of names in a text and classify them into specified categories. These categories can be name of people, organizations, companies, places (country, city, street, etc.), time related to names (date and time), financial values, percentages, etc. Although during the past decade a lot of researches has been done on NER in ...

The Many Names of ( 7 , 3 , 1 ) EZRA BROWN

In the world of discrete mathematics, we encounter a bewildering variety of topics with no apparent connection between them. But appearances are deceptive. For example, combinatorics tells us about difference sets, block designs, and triple systems. Geometry leads us to finite projective planes and Latin squares. Graph theory introduces us to round–robin tournaments and map colorings, linear al...

Closed Action Calculi

Action calculi provide a framework for capturing many kinds of interactive behaviour by focussing on the primitive notion of names. We introduce a name-free account of action calculi, called the closed action calculi, and show that there is a strong correspondence between the original presentation and the name-free presentation. We also add free names plus natural axioms to the closed world, an...

Translation of Anthroponyms in Children’s Cartoons: A Comparative Analysis of English Dialogues and Persian Subtitles

The impact of animated cartoons on children has already been emphasized by quite many researchers. The present study aimed to investigate the strategies Iranian subtitlers of English animated cartoons used in re n- dering English anthroponyms in cartoons. To this aim, two theoretical frameworks were employed: Van Coillie's Model of Translating Proper Names and Fernandes’s Model of Proper N...
